If you wish to live longer, reduce your everyday stress to the minimum. Why? Because stress has undesirable mental as well as physical impact on the longevity health of an individual. Stress relief holds the key to longevity health.
Stress is mental, but it is also a delayed physical reaction. Stress causes fear. When fear is experienced in the body, fear is also expressed for the body. For example, if you have a deadline to meet in your work, you become stressed because you also become fearful of the possibility of losing your job. Any physical fear may create another stress—the stress to avoid the fear of any unpleasant outcome, such as pain, injury, or even death. In other words, fear can create a vicious circle of chronic stress and fear
When fear is acutely felt in the body, it causes anxiety that can cause physical illness. Worse, once fear becomes a habit, it is hard to be eradicated. Much of human adult behavior is based on the fear that we can be ignored or even abandoned, and our own helplessness to deal with it; fear is a sign of our vulnerability.
So, what is stress? Stress is a mental perception of fear that is based on an individual’s past experiences. Once the input is imprinted on the subconscious mind, it begins to generate thoughts that control the conscious mind, leading to anxiety and fear, among other negative feelings. The human mind is thinking non-stop without being consciously aware of it. Therefore, if the mind continues to dwell on those thoughts of fear, chronic stress may result.
Because your mind does not voluntarily stay in the present moment, constantly shuffling back and forth between the past and the future, the only way to stop the compulsive thinking mind is to direct it to the present moment. When your mind stays in the present moment, it stops its thinking process of the past or the future and thus giving your mind a meaningful break for deep relaxation. This is how you relax your mind for stress relief.
Practice mind training to focus on the present moment so as to de-stress yourself by withdrawing the thinking mind from the past and the future whenever it is not needed. You can practice this by focusing on your breathing, or simply by concentrating your mental attention on a simple household chore, such as washing the dishes. To illustrate, you can focus your mind on your daily chores, such as washing dishes. Pay full attention to the sound and feel of the water from the tap, the bubbles and scent of the detergent in the kitchen sink. If you do just that, instead of watching the television or listening to the radio, you will feel very relaxed after doing the dishes, and you will not look upon it as an unpleasant chore anymore. Try this tonight, and feel the difference in your mind after doing the dishes with your full mental attention.
There are many different ways for mental relaxation to reduce stress for longevity health. The important thing to remember is to focus your mental attention on something insignificant or irrelevant, such as breathing or doing the dishes.
