Longevity for You
Mental health and aging are inter-related. It is as important as physical health.

Dementia, delirium, memory loss, sundowning and mental depression are often signs of aging or deterioration in mental conditions. A healthy mind is the most potent anti-aging pill.

As you age, you mind also ages. Your body needs nutrients, so does your mind. Your mind is not very different from your body. The only difference is that you can see your body, but you cannot see your mind.

The physical conditions of your nervous and immune systems can influence your mental health; likewise, the state of your mental health can directly affect your physical well-being. Your body does not function independently of your mind. Therefore, mental health is critical to your overall physical well-being, the foundation of anti-aging.

Your body changes with aging; your organs and body systems become limited in their normal functioning. Such limitations generally result from disease, not aging.

Aging

Aging is normally associated with some drawbacks in gathering and processing information, as well as in language functioning. However, as you age, you may still retain your full or nearly full mental capacity, including cognitive functions. In other words, in spite of your advanced age, normal mental health should enable you to do the following:

·  To learn

·  To remember new information

·  To communicate

·  To solve problems

On the other hand,
confusion and disorientation are not the normal consequences of aging; they are more disease related. It is important to differentiate the consequences of normal aging and those of disease, such that appropriate measures can be taken to treat or manage the symptoms to improve your overall mental health.

Delirium and dementia

Both are common phenomena, but not necessarily the consequences, of aging. They impair mental health, making longevity living a challenge. Delirium and dementia are not quite the same. The former is impaired consciousness with pronounced lack of attention; the symptoms are acute and fluctuating within a short period. The latter is gradual and slow, with symptoms of disturbed consciousness varying day to day.

Memory loss

Memory loss may be due to the following:

·  Illness, disease and infection
·  Constipation
·  Dehydration
·  Brain damage
·  Depression
·  Alcohol
·  Drugs (especially those anesthetic agents, narcotic analgesics, and benzodiazepines)

Memory loss may affect long-term mental health.

Sundowning

Sundowning refers to acute confusion occurring late in the day or at night due to sensory deprivation. Adequate lighting and more sensory stimulation, such as sounds, may improve mental health by preventing or reducing the recurrence of sundowning episodes.

Managing memory problems

Memory problems often interfere with your daily longevity living. To manage your memory problems, you may try the following:

·  Mnemonic aids (use of lists and reminders)

·  Self-cuing

The good news is that numerous conditions associated with memory impairment are treatable and reversible, especially when the conditions causing the delirium are successfully addressed, such as deficiency in vitamin B12,
depression, and autoimmune diseases. However, when these conditions remain untreated for more than six months to a year, clinical experience suggests that the prognosis for recovery of memory function may become slim and the damage to mental health may even be permanent.

The best and most effective way to manage your memory is to use it, instead of relying on cues or reminders.

Memory Improvement Techniques unlocks the secrets to a perfect computer-like memory in just about five minutes a day. At any age, your memory is powerful, but it is untrained. Memory Improvement Techniques trains you to acquire the skills of “flash memorization” so that you don’t need to remember the things you want to remember the hard way. You don’t need to read memory books, or attend expensive memory workshops. In Memory Improvement Techniques, you will find everything you ever wanted to know about improving your memory. This is the book that will make you proud of your memory - and it goes a long way in delaying and preventing Alzheimer’s disease because it helps you fully utilize your mind at all times!

Mental depression

Mental depression is one the most common mental disorders that may adversely affect mental health. There are several current theories about the causes of mental depression:
hereditary predisposition, chemical imbalances, or hormonal changes. A more widely accepted theory of the cause of mental depression is distorted thinking.

Distorted thinking

Distorted thinking has a long-term psychological effect on your mental health.

According to many psychologists and therapists, your mood is determined by the way you think about your own experience. If you choose to think of unpleasant things, you will experience unpleasant emotional responses or moods. Your thoughts are only what you decide to believe in and continually reinforce in your mind. In fact, those who develop depression have characteristic patterns of thought towards life in general until they become habitual:

·  They consistently focus on criticism, if not of others and events, of themselves. This criticism fosters the characteristic negative thinking.

·  They often exaggerate ideas of their duty and responsibility to compensate feelings of inadequacy. Self-importance and demand for attention are defensive ways of hiding low self-esteem.

·  They demonstrate a tendency to draw personal, negative conclusions from a situation that in fact is neutral and impersonal. They may base an overall conclusion on a single event by focusing on one aspect of a situation taken out of context, giving it undue attention and importance.

·  They may exaggerate difficulties and limitations, thereby minimizing their achievements and capabilities, or justification for non-action.

The good news is that if you have learned or inoculated yourself with erroneous, self-defeating notions that lead to mental depression, you just have to unlearn them, and discard your distorted thinking for better mental health.

·  Admission of your distorted thinking is the first and necessary step to redemption; any justification or self-denial will not do you any good. If you are paranoid, admit your paranoia. Denial will not do you any good: it simply perpetuates the conditions.

·  Tap into the personal power of your mind - which we all have - and harness it. People who use such power will make their dreams come true. They are persistent and persevering, taking immediate and repeated actions until they can live their dreams.

·  You may have the same yearnings and desires as they do, but you just stay stuck in a rudder and become unfulfilled because your mind is preoccupied with the unpleasant past experience and haunted by an endless series of “what if” questions for the future. As a result, you feel impotent, and you are haunted by the past and overwhelmed by what is ahead of you.

·  You become what you think you are - a self-fulfilling prophecy. But you have more power over your thoughts than you may think. Control your own thinking, and do not let it control you. Go to my website Rethink Your Thinking to find out how your mind can work for you, instead of against you.

Optimism and pessimism

Be neither a pessimist nor an optimist. Extreme pessimism is a catastrophe magnified, but extreme optimism is reality denied. Neither is good for mental health. Given the same situation, a pessimist may give up while an optimist may strive to change the situation. A healthy dose of optimism can be uplifting and hopeful, while a healthy dose of pessimism can be realistic and wise. Achieving a balance of being realistic and hopeful is a challenge, but essential to positive mental health.

Remember this maxim:
Your life experiences remain the same; but your perception and response to those experiences will make a difference in your life. Accordingly, your thinking plays a decisive role in your mental health.

Fortunately, optimism can be learned, and pessimism can be unlearned.

Ways to become more optimistic

The first step to optimism is to identify the thoughts and beliefs running through the back of your mind after something unpleasant has happened.

Interpret repeatedly your beliefs and feelings.

Challenge, if necessary, your beliefs, not your feelings, because what you feel is what you feel and it is real to you; but your beliefs may change under the scrutiny of logic and perspective.

If you are paranoid about something, your fear is genuine; but challenging and rationalizing it with common sense and logic may change your feelings. If you act despite your feelings, your beliefs and emotions will follow right behind.

Next, record all your feelings about several events and your different responses to them. Do this for a few unpleasant situations, which may or may not be similar. You might then begin to see a repeated pattern in how you interpret and react to those events, and that will help you become aware of and, ultimately, change that unwanted pattern.

If pessimistic thoughts, such as “
People are always mean to me,” or “I will never be able to do it,” pop up in your mind, tell yourself that a pessimistic way of thinking is present for you. Once your thoughts begin to change, you may feel better, contributing to rejuvenated mental health.

The next step is to distract yourself from your pessimistic beliefs or dispute them.

Disputing pessimistic beliefs will bring deeper and longer lasting results than distracting will, but distraction can also be as effective and may sometimes be easier on you.

If you want to get away from a problem, you should not focus on it. Too much thinking and analyzing may make any problem seem worse than it actually is. Instead, focus your attention on something else.

Disputing pessimistic beliefs involves replacing them with more logical and realistic explanations.

Step back and re-evaluate the situation, and your thoughts may come into focus, becoming more positive, and you may even be able to work things out faster. On the other hand, if you painstakingly ruminate and relive your experiences, repeatedly analyzing them, and getting in touch with your feelings about them, you will only reinforce those unhappy feelings; analysis creates paralysis.

If you are mentally healthy, you are forever caught up in the moment, never thinking about the past or the future - both of which you have no control. Today is a wonderful day - live it in the present, and live it to the fullest! You will be surprised how this positive attitude can restore your mental health

Maintaining a hopeful, positive, yet realistic perspective in the face of adversity and advancing years can be a challenge, but it is essential to living peacefully and happily as you age. This is the key to vibrant mental health.

A sense of humor is an anti-aging pill. A dose of good humor helps you get out of a seemingly hopeless situation in life. Learn to laugh at others as well as at yourself. Did you know that humor can be acquired? A good sense of humor will attract people to you like a magnet. Develop that sense of humor for dynamic mental health.

Just as it is important to recognize what is unjust and unfair in our lives and in the world, it is equally important to see the beauty, love, generosity, and goodness that abound around us. To find out more about the Oriental approach to
compassion and loving kindness, go to my website Mindfulness.

Distinguish between your mind and your will. Your mind, a thought-producing machine, provides you with many options to choose from, but your will makes the final decision.

So much in life is beyond your control. Whatever, that is your life and only you can decide to be happy. You can choose to be happy regardless of your circumstances. Your happiness is a result of your decision to be happy. Your emotions and feelings are created by your thoughts.

Happiness or unhappiness cannot exist on its own. It occurs because of your thoughts, which can be changed by your will, if you decide to do so. If you can think, you can change.

Your past thoughts are about events, however glorious they might have been, that are no longer real. The good or bad experience is gone and exists solely in your mind as a memory. Yesterday is a bygone day, today is a new day, and tomorrow is another day. Ruminating about the past only paralyzes the present and may even doom the future with anticipatory anxiety. How you process your thoughts will make a big difference in your life!

Avoid negative self-talk, a destructive habit that may end up talking you out of actions you deem too scary or uncomfortable. Do not let negative self-talk interfere with your daily decision.

Instead, practice positive self-talk, and reinforce it with
visualization, which forces you to focus all your mental energies on positive images, thereby transcending the many negative forces that may distract and bedevil you.

Learn to love yourself more, not hate. According to psychologists, you cannot love another person unless you learn to love yourself first. So
learn to love yourself first.

You want more money, more control of your life or the people around you, and more respect due to you - just like everybody else. Just as you may have a dream, you may also have a reality, which, sadly, bears no similarity whatsoever to your dream, and which exists only as an escape from the reality you wish so much to avoid.

Now, think of your own reality.

·  Are you happy with what you are, or who you are?
·  Do you resent yourself in any way?
·  Do you like what you see in you?

If you hate the life you live, the people you have to deal with, the actions you are forced to take, then you have succumbed to the destructive human emotion -
self-hate.

You hate yourself, but you do not know how to bring about the makeover that will bring forth a better you. You may have become consumed with self-pity, frustration, and ultimately self-hate. Your mind can no longer function in a constructive manner to create a new life for yourself. Instead, you mind is geared towards self-destruction, which aggravates your mental health.

On the other hand, you may even fantasize a different you - someone you desperately wish you were. In doing so, you cut yourself from the real world. The only problem is the day of reckoning - one day you will wake up and that would not be pleasant.

Do not ever poison your mind with self-hate or fantasy, which is a substitute for action and logical thinking. Just learn to love yourself - and more at that. Love yourself for what you are and who you are. Love may solve most, if not all, of your problems. Love will elevate you to the level of spirituality, which transcends all things.

The power of the mind

To sum up, a happy and successful life has everything to do with the mind - your mind! Anti-aging requires a healthy mind.

In life, happiness and success are not about
struggles, working hard, and talents. They are all about mind-set, choices, and attitudes, which form your formula for a happy and successful life.
